6 months ago, Landin Mac & Cheese moved to 701 Melrose Avenue. They used to be next door. But, community demand for the savory side dish-turned-main-menu-item for the restaurant called for more space. It also called for Landin’s re-opening ahead of completed maintenance.
The interior is plain, except for mismatched tables and chairs surrounded by the bright yellow walls. Co-owner Sergio Sanchez Jr., who runs the business with his father, Sanchez Sr., apologized for the appearance. People were literally calling the restaurant for Landin to resume business, he explained. So they did.
Why mac-n-cheese? After immigrating from Mexico to The Bronx 15-years-ago, Sanchez Sr. cooked in a number of Manhattan restaurants with mac recipes—a dish he realized was famous with New Yorkers. Sanchez Sr. saw an opportunity to bring the city’s favorite side dish uptown to give The Bronx the delicious spins on an old classic for cheap. With Sanchez Jr—formerly a teacher—in charge of business operations, Landin Mac & Cheese opened their doors to Melrose residents in June of 2011.
5 years later the mac-n-cheese shop’s reputation precedes it. It’s a Top Rated restaurant on Yelp, where reviewers originally created the page for Landin just so they could rave about it. The owners eventually claimed it.
Hot chicken mac and cheese
The hype is well-deserved. The baked mac-n-cheese menu has something for everyone, including the option to customize your ingredients. Sanchez Sr. is always experimenting with new recipes like sweet BBQ and Hawaiian, though the most popular picks are classics: Mexican (red pepper, jalapeños, and scallions), hot chicken (buffalo sauce), and bacon (unsurprisingly).
The mac menu also features minis of each recipe for under $3 if you want to sample certain flavors. We tried all three faves with the Mexican in a mini.
Hot, creamy, savory, and salty—each recipe left nothing to be wanted, except repentance and some soul cycle classes. They were sinfully good. But for $6.00, you can’t not dive into a dish of Landin’s baked mac-n-cheese. Just make sure you order enough to take home so you can enjoy the spoils again later.
Bacon mac and cheese
While you’re in, be sure to also add a Jarritos to your order. A cool bottle of the popular Mexican soda is just the thing to complete the meal. We recommend tamarind.
There are plenty of other classic items to choose from on Landin’s menu, like tacos, quesadillas, and burgers, but consider the baked mac a right of passage to the rest.
