A South Bronx warehouse will be the location of The Bronx’s first food hall and market, similar to the Gansevoort Market in the Meatpacking District and the Chelsea Market. The ‘Bruckner Market’ is being built by developer Keith Rubenstein, who is also developing a residential complex across the street from the new market. Plans are still being finalized, but, according to The Real Deal, Rubenstein says he “envisions a fresh food market, food kiosks, sit-down restaurants and possibly a beer garden”. Rubenstein posted a “Piano District” billboard in the area months ago, which people interpreted as an offensive’rebranding’ of SoBro. They’d expressed their opinions about it using the social media hashtag #WhatPianoDistrict. [The Real Deal]

The news also says Bottura is collaborating with the Italian consul of New York on the new dining hall. No other details are available. [Eater]

Swale, a “food forest” of edible and medicinal perennial plants was built on a floating barge in The Bronx.  It will dock at select locations in New York City until October. During the open hours, people will be allowed to go onto the barge and pick food and plants for free. You are not allowed to forage on public land in NYC, but land laws are different from water laws, so the floating food barge allows foraging within city laws. “Part of our thinking is how can we be more self-sufficient in the city,” said artist Mary Mattingly and founder of the idea for the food forest in a video interview by the WSJ.
