The Bronx is known for a lot of things. Food isn’t one of them. But for the nearly 1.5 million residents that call this “food desert” home, we are eating something and it isn’t sand.
Savor the Bronx restaurant week, running from Nov 2-13 this year, is an effort by Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. to spotlight the culinary culture uptown and address the absence of Bronx eateries from New York City restaurant week each year.
“We know The Bronx is full of epicureans, but even more importantly we know there are even people from outside of The Bronx who we want to come here so we can show off our very best restaurants,” he explained to press for the Savor the Bronx kick off at Patricia’s restaurant on Thursday, October 29th.
Now in its 5th year, Savor the Bronx is boasting the largest roster ever with over 40 participating restaurants, including Thursday’s host, Patricia’s. Owner Patricia Borgognona credited the restaurant’s presence in the 2015 line up with the objective to have everyone enjoy their food and a desire to make the Morris Park neighborhood bigger than what it is.
The Bronx Brewery, which celebrated its one year anniversary a week ago, is also participating in Savor the Bronx 2015. “Obviously, beer and food they go very well together. We wanted to be included in the highlighting of some of the great restaurants The Bronx has to offer. Brooklyn and Manhattan, they get so much respect for their food. But The Bronx has so many culinary offerings. We really wanted to be apart of that to help showcase what The Bronx is all about,” explained the brewery’s marketing coordinator Andrew Steigbigel.
Other businesses were a bit more hesitant. Morris Park resident and community activist Ruth Papazian personally recruited some of her neighborhood’s eateries this year.
The hope is enough Bronxites will turn out for the 12-day event to make it a real community affair, and enough New Yorkers beyond the borough will hitch their appetites to their caravans across our increasingly mouthwatering food desert to make Savor the Bronx’s 5th anniversary truly memorable.
